MICROBIOMES [BIOL 419 / 519]

In this course we peer into the exciting world of microbiome research and dive deep into how microorganisms shape nearly every aspect of daily life for animals. This is a lecture-based course with weekly discussions covering primary literature.

Through readings from “I Contain Multitudes” by Ed Yong and supplementary readings from primary literature, this course will:
-    Introduce historical background, terminology, technology, techniques, and concepts of host-microbe ecology.
-    Discuss the diverse ways that the microbiome can affect the host, and the numerous factors that can shape the microbiome community.
-    Review current literature on host-associated microbial ecology.

Generally around 20 students.

GENERAL MICROBIOLOGY [BIOL 351 / 352L]

Anatomy, physiology, genetics, and ecology of microorganisms. Principles of bacterial techniques, host-parasite relationships and infection and immunity.

Generally around 100 students.
